Abstract

Some of the heavy mental are needed at low concentration levels, however in some occasions they induce toxic effects on aquatic animals through accumulation in different organs leading to tissue damage and interfering with normal growth and reproduction. The aim of this study was to estimate the toxicity effects of zinc, copper and mercury on Gambusia fish (Gambusia holbrooki) in 350 mg/LCaco3 water hardness. The experimental design was completely randomizes using Zn, Cu & Hg in 5, 5 and 6 treatments in tri replicates respectively. The research method was as experimental-analysis. Results showed that 20 unit increase in water hardness (from 25 to 350 mg/L), led to 40 units decline in Cu toxicity during 96 h in G. holbrooki. Critical limits were determined as: 0.31 to 0.62 mg/L for Cucl2, 100 to 120 mg/L for Znso4 and 0.25 to 0.5 mg/L for Hgcl2, respectively. Indeed the highest sensitivity (in terms of toxicity) was observed in these ranges. The highest mortality rate observed in the first 24 hour which indicates the serious effects of these elements on fish health. Considering LC50 recorded in this experiment, it can be concluded that the highest rate of toxicity belonged to mercury, copper and zinc; respectively
