English

The construction industry, although it makes a significant contribution to the development and progress of a society, is on the other hand also considered a destroyer of the environment. The lack of a proper program regarding the generation, collection, and recycling of construction waste is today considered one of the major environmental problems. The recycling and reuse of demolition waste is of importance both economically and environmentally. If these materials have the necessary properties, they can be used in the structure of cement blocks. Given that concrete, brick, ceramic, tile, and mosaic constitute a significant volume of building demolition debris, in this research, in order to investigate the feasibility of using these materials in the structure of hollow cement blocks, experiments were conducted based on the Iranian National Standard No. 70, which confirm the possibility of manufacturing non-load-bearing cement blocks with these materials. The compressive strength (32 to 36 kg/cm²), water absorption (201 to 275 kg/m³), and density (2000 to 22000 kg/m³) tests performed on the manufactured blocks confirm that, without using natural materials and additives and only with the construction waste present in the dumps, a block conforming to Iranian standards can be made.
